What School Leaders Can Do About Curiosity

In 1999, the researcher Sugata Mitra cut a hole in a wall in Kalkaji, Delhi, mounted a computer in it facing a slum, and walked away. No instruction, no supervision, no teacher. Children who had never used a computer and did not read English were browsing within hours and teaching each other within days.

The experiment has been argued about ever since, and the strong claims made for it later deserve the scepticism they received. But the narrow finding has held up well, and it is the one that matters to a principal: children will teach themselves difficult things, in groups, without being asked, if the material is in front of them and nobody is grading it.

Which raises the awkward question of what a school is doing that stops this happening on its own.

The constraint is real

Most writing on curiosity in schools is written by people who have never had to publish a board result. A principal has a syllabus to finish, parents who compare percentages, teachers already at capacity, and an inspection regime that measures what is measurable. Telling that person to make learning joyful is not advice.

So the useful question is narrower. What can be changed without adding a subject, extending the day, or putting results at risk?

Four things that fit inside the constraint

  1. Tie one chapter a month to something in the news. Not a new lesson - the same lesson, opened with a current example. Chemical reactions next to a story about battery supply chains. This costs five minutes of preparation and changes what the chapter is for.

  2. Create one ungraded output a year. A paper, an exhibition, a presentation to parents that carries no marks. The absence of a grade is the active ingredient, and it is the part most schools remove first when time gets tight.

  3. Let students see teachers not knowing. A teacher who says I don't know, let us find out is modelling the entire capacity. A teacher who cannot afford to say it is modelling the opposite, and students read it accurately.

  4. Publish student work outside the school. A paper on the school website with the student's name on it is read by relatives, neighbours and eventually strangers. Audience does something that marks cannot.

The measurement problem, honestly

Curiosity, creativity, communication, critical thinking and collaboration share an inconvenient property: none of them are easily quantifiable. A system that must measure what it teaches will teach what it can measure. That is not a failure of will on anyone's part - it is arithmetic, and pretending otherwise is why so many curiosity initiatives quietly die in their second year.

The realistic move is not to measure curiosity but to protect a small space where it is not being measured, and to defend that space when the calendar gets tight. Schools that manage this tend to do it through one protected slot, one visible output, and a head who refuses to give it away in February.

The children at that wall in Kalkaji had no timetable to protect. Most schools do. The work is making a little room inside it, not pretending the room is free.
